Sai Baba Tries to Copyright Gita

December 21, 2004
Puttaparthi, South India.

Sri Sathya Sai Baba has unsuccessfully filed for a copyright on the ancient text of the Gita.

He claimed to have spoken the original Sanskrit verses in a previous lifetime and sought to take legal action against all other publishers of the book for copyright infringement.

The Library of Congress immediately rejected his application for a copyright and a spokesperson for the copyright office told reporters that this had to be the most outlandish claim of intellectual property rights anyone has filed to date.
